About Coinpocket Studio
We are a small design development studio with a diverse and multi-lingual staff, located in the historic Garment Center of New York City. We offer expert hands-on product development and production support services for the entire lifecycle of your apparel brand. We are beginner-friendly, but we also offer a high level of expertise that will satisfy customers with deep industry experience of their own. Our à la carte menu of services is designed to meet the specific needs of each customer at whatever phase they are in the development of their brand. So, whether you are still in the concept phase, preparing to launch, entering production, or in need of a design overhaul, we have the experience, knowledge, expertise, and hands-on skill sets to bring your ideas to life. We help content creators become makers.
Elizabeth Allison Craig, Coinpocket Studio founder, has worked in the Garment Center for over 40 years – first as a designer, then a patternmaker, a production manager, a leader of several product development teams, and back through the whole product lifecycle again. Her unique perspective and wide range of experience has been gained by working with both domestic and overseas manufacturing, in large corporations and across a diverse group of apparel categories, and has included all price points, with an emphasis on design-driven collections, high quality make, and expert fit.
Esteban D’Oleo, Thea Tian, Liz Yerkes, Maya Eng-Garcia, and Sandra Bustamente comprise the Coinpocket Studio team of Patternmaking Associates, Production Associates, and Samplemaker. All have studied at or are recent graduates of Fashion Institute of Technology or Parsons School of Design in New York City, and equivalent professional Fashion Studies programs elsewhere in the States and abroad.
How We Work
We start by asking prospective customers to tell us something about themselves and their brand by filling out the Contact form at the bottom of our Services page. After we review your contact form, if it seems to us that we’d be a good fit for you, we schedule a free 30-minute meeting with Elizabeth for the principals of your company. Once we’ve all decided we want to work together, we follow up on that first meeting with a suggested work plan for the services we think you'll need to get started, an estimate of what that work will cost, and a realistic timeline for completing the agreed-on work. New customers fill in a more detailed New Customer Intake form, put down a deposit for work to be done, and then we get to work, bringing your vision to life.
A typical design development project might include:
- a sketch review (yours or ours, and/or a review of whatever inspiration product samples or photos you've collected)
- a sourcing review (your proposed fabric resources, those we suggest, or both)
- muslins pinned on a mannequin, for your design review and edits
- patternmaking for first proto samples
- making proto samples, either at our studio or at a factory we think is a likely future contractor for your brand
- sample review on a live model for fit and style line
- pattern and design edits
- making final photo samples
- and guidance on pricing, based on estimated volume of first sales.
A typical domestic production project might include:
- help and direction in sourcing production fabrics and trims
- a collaborative process to re-evaluate first proto samples for fit, and decide the best size range for your brand
- development of a customized grade rule for your selected size range
- support for the costing process and pricing strategy
- oversight of the grading and marking process
- recommendations, and introductions to, the cutting room and factories that are the best fit for the brand
- liaison with and oversight of contractors through the production process
- Tech Design support and in-line inspections where needed
- and a careful final QC, before you approve delivery of your finished goods.
